Alan Axelrod

Alen Axelrod is the author of some 150 books on leadership, management, careers, history, military history, corporate history, career, general business, and other nonfiction. After receiving my Ph.D. in English (specializing in early American literature and culture) from the University of Iowa in 1979, He taught early American literature and culture at Lake Forest College (Lake Forest, Illinois) and at Furman University (Greenville, South Carolina). He was an editor and scholar with the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum (Winterthur, Delaware), an institution specializing in the history and material culture of America prior to 1832. He was associate editor at Van Nostrand Reinhold (New York), senior editor at Abbeville Press (New York), and vice president of Zenda, Inc. (New York and Nashville), a consulting firm to museums and cultural institutions. In 1994, he became director of development (senior acquisitions editor) for Turner Publishing, Inc. (Atlanta), a subsidiary of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., and in 1997, he founded The Ian Samuel Group, Inc., a consulting, creative services, editing, and online content provider in Atlanta.

He has been a creative consultant (and on-camera personality) for The Wild West television documentary series (Warner Bros., 1993), Civil War Journal (A&E Network, 1994), “The American Experience” series (PBS, 2016), and The Discovery Channel, and he has appeared on MSNBC, CNN, CNNfn, CNBC, Fox Network affiliates in Philadelphia and Atlanta, and numerous radio news and talk programs, including National Public Radio. He and his work have been featured in BusinessWeek, Fortune, Men’s Health, Cosmopolitan, Inc., Atlanta Business Chronicle, and many newspapers, including Atlanta Journal-Constitution and USA Today. Axelrod has served as consultant for the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum (Rochester, New York), the Airman Memorial Museum (Suitland, Maryland), and the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum (Winterthur, Delaware).

Kelly Kennedy

Kelly Kennedy served in the United States Army from 1987 to 1993, including tours in the Middle East during Desert Storm, and in Mogadishu, Somalia. She is working on three new books, including a fiction novel with a Gulf War twist. After earning her journalism degree at Colorado State University in 1997, she began her writing career as an education reporter for the Ogden Standard-Examiner in Utah, a criminal justice reporter at The Salt Lake Tribune, and a family and education reporter with the Oregonian in Portland. While earning a master’s degree in journalism at the University of Colorado, Kennedy taught journalism classes at both her alma mater and the University of Northern Colorado. After completing her master’s degree, she worked an internship at The Chicago Tribune before arriving in 2005 at Army Times. She began work as a health policy reporter in 2010 at USA TODAY, where she covered health issues in Desert Storm veterans, as well as health issues associated with burn pits and dust in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2010, she received an Honorary Mention John B. Oakes award for her reporting on burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as Disabled American Veterans’ Bugle Award for the burn pit stories and her book, They Fought for Each Other. In 2008, she was named a finalist for the Michael Kelly Award for a series about a unit she embedded with in Iraq. She is also a 2008 Ochberg Fellow, sponsored by the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma; and a 2008 Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Journalism Foundation Fellow. Catharine Clark-Sayles, M.D.

Catharine Clark-Sayles is a doctor and a poet. She grew up in an Air Force family with frequent moves across the United States. An Army scholarship paid for medical school and she spent time on active duty as an Army doctor. Major Clark-Sayles left the Army but continued working in a military hospital until she established her own internal medicine and geriatrics practice. When she turned forty. she decided to return to a childhood love of writing and poetry, initially educating herself by seeking classes at the local bookstore. She found mentor poets who patiently answered the stupid questions and encouraged her to keep writing. In 2019 she completed an MFA in creative writing focused on poetry and narrative medicine at Dominican University of California. She retired from her medical practice in 2019 after forty years of house calls, nursing home rounds, ER calls and daily hospital rounds. She is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. She has published two books with Tebot Bach Press: “One Breath” is poems from medical school and medical practice, “Lifeboat” contains poems of family and travel. “Brats”, a chapbook was published by Finishing Line Press and contains poems drawn from a military-family childhood. It was awarded the Poetry of Modern Conflict Award. Many poems have appeared in journals and anthologies. Coming soon is “The Telling, The Listening” from Saint Julian Press which contains narrative poems spanning forty years of practice. 

Stephen Ambrose

Stephen Ambrose was a renowned historian and acclaimed author of more than 30 books. Among his New York Times best-sellers are: Nothing Like It in the World, Citizen Soldiers, Band of Brothers, D-Day – June 6, 1944, and Undaunted Courage.He was not only a great author, but also a captivating speaker, with the unique ability to provide insight into the future by employing his profound knowledge of the past. His stories demonstrate how leaders use trust, friendship and shared experiences to work together and thrive during conflict and change. His philosophy about keeping an audience engaged is put best in his own words: “As I sit at my computer, or stand at the podium, I think of myself as sitting around the campfire after a day on the trail, telling stories that I hope will have the members of the audience, or the readers, leaning forward just a bit, wanting to know what happens next.” Dr. Ambrose was a retired Boyd Professor of History at the University of New Orleans. He was also a contributing editor for the Quarterly Journal of Military History, a member of the board of directors for American Rivers, and a member of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Council Board. His talents have not gone unnoticed by the film industry. Dr. Ambrose was the historical consultant for Steven Spielberg’s movie Saving Private Ryan. Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks purchased the film rights to his books Citizen Soldiers and Band of Brothers to make the 13-hour HBO mini-series Band of Brothers. He has also participated in numerous national television programs, including ones for the History Channel and National Geographic. 

Rick DeStefanis

Rick DeStefanis utilizes his training and experiences as a paratrooper with the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division from 1970 to 1972 to predicate his Vietnam War Series, a collection of novels written as historical fiction, but which exceed simple genre classification. DeStefanis writes not only about men at war, but the women they love and their families back home, as well as the people of Vietnam. In his own words, he explains, “I don’t write Sergeant Rock comic books.”

DeStefanis is the author of eight books, including three award-winning novels, “The Gomorrah Principle”, awarded the 2015 Readers’ Favorite Award for military fiction, “Valley of the Purple Hearts”, awarded the 2017 Best Indie Book Award for literary fiction, and “The Birdhouse Man”, awarded the Military Writers Society of America Gold Medal. His works include two additional Vietnam War novels as well as a historical western trilogy (in progress) that currently includes two books, “Rawlins, No Longer Young” and “Rawlins, Into Montana.”

DeStefanis also has to his credit a southern dark comedy novel “Tallahatchie”, a result of his lifelong residence in the South where he says he chooses to write fiction because the truth exceeds believability.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Rick has lived in northern Mississippi for most of this adult life., where he currently resides with his wife, Janet, and provides assisted living for four or five cats and a couple of dogs—including a male Labrador retriever named Blondie.

Marilynn E. Doenges

Marilynn E. Doenges, a centenarian, is a remarkable woman with a rich and diverse life. Her journey began during World War II when she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps. Marilynn served at the Fifth Service Command, Ashford General Hospital, West Virginia, where she cared for soldiers returning from the Battle of the Bulge. She later embarked on a European Theater service, providing nursing care to troops in various locations in England and France. Marilynn’s experiences during the war shaped her perspective, giving her a broader view of the world and an understanding of the harsh realities of war.

After the war, Marilynn pursued her passion for nursing, working at Aultman Hospital and later obtaining a B.S. in Nursing from the University of Colorado. She met her husband Dean at the university, and together they raised five children. Marilynn’s nursing career encompassed various roles, including surgical nursing, private duty nursing, psychiatric care nursing, and teaching. She made significant contributions to the nursing profession through her co-authorship of nursing care plans, nursing diagnosis books, and nursing pocket guides that have been translated into multiple languages.

Beyond her professional achievements, Marilynn actively engaged in her community. She supported widows’ groups, volunteered for AARP’s telephone support group, and received recognition for her dedicated community service. Marilynn’s warmth and infectious smile have endeared her to many, putting people at ease in her presence. As a mother, she nurtured her children, providing them with memorable adventures and enriching experiences.

Marilynn’s life has been filled with love, adventure, and a commitment to making a difference. Her enduring spirit and positive outlook have carried her through a century of joy, challenges, and accomplishments. She is a living legend, honored for her service to her country as a World War II veteran and recognized for her significant contributions to the field of nursing. Marilynn continues to inspire others with her resilience, kindness, and zest for life.

P.S. Barlow is the author and illustrator of “G.I. Low” a Military Cartoon based on his decade of service in the United States Army. In addition, he is a Stand-Up comedian based in Georgia. 

Sue Hoppin

Sue Hoppin is the founder and president of the National Military Spouse Network, a professional development and networking organization supporting military spouses who must balance their own dreams and ambitions with the military lifestyle. Before founding the NMSN, Sue served as the first deputy director for spouse outreach for the Military Officers Association of America, charged with creating and spearheading military spouse initiatives for the 370,000 member association. In 2007, Sue co-authored, “A Family’s Guide to the Military” for the popular Dummies series. In recognition of her accomplishments, Military Spouse Magazine named Sue on both their 2007 and 2008 Who’s Who of Military Spouses list recognizing those who have made significant contributions in the military community for all military spouses; making her the only person to be named on the list two years in a row.

Sue Hoppin is passionate about quality of life issues for military families because she lives and understands the challenges of the military lifestyle. Elements of her story are shared by any number of other military spouses.

Dan E Hendrickson

Dan Hendrickson was born in Sheridan Wyoming near the rustic Big Horn mountain range in 1962 to Carl and Helen Hendrickson. Dan went to school in the Sheridan School District graduating from Sheridan High School in 1981. He spent his athletic time participating in boxing, martial arts, wrestling and a little track. His father Carl owned a small eight lane bowling alley that he ran until Dan was 12 years old. After losing the business to the bank he was forced to go back to school and finish his masters in English. Dan picked up on his father’s love of the written word and enrolled in Casper Community College in 1982 majoring in journalism. Although he found that he had an aptitude for investigative reporting he decided that his desires lied in other areas. He went on to do much volunteer Christian ministry work throughout the United States most of his adult life and continues to pursue those endeavors to this day. During that time he gained another degree in Practical Theology and throughout his many ministry assignments work several secular jobs. Most notable were his auto detailing endeavors. He also has devoted a good portion of his life to studying the martial arts. He has black belts in 2 styles, Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, and a high brown belt in Han Foo Wa. He has instructed at martial arts schools off and on for over 20 years. He and his wife Cheryl have owned three different detailing businesses throughout the country the last of which they still run to this day. Recently he has returned to his passion of telling stories and has several books in the process of being published. 

Melissa Cannioto

Melissa is an artist, adventurer, and chatterbox who has been writing stories from an early age.

Growing up in a little village in England, Melissa studied English Literature and went on to further her education in San Diego. Since then, she has traveled the world finding inspiration and new friends, and now works as an Adventure Guide for Disney.

She is married to her best friend and adventure buddy, a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, and resides wherever the military takes them.

Jason Kasper

Jason Kasper is the USA Today bestselling author of the Spider Heist, American Mercenary, and Shadow Strike thriller series. Tracey L. Brown Ph.D.

Tracey L. Brown, Ph.D. is a recipient of a 2014 Graduate Scholar Award from On Sustainability for her research and contributions in the field of sustainability. She is also the winner of a 2014 P.E.O. Scholar award and was named a 2014 O’Pake Graduate Leadership Fellow.

Brown has a Doctorate of Philosophy in Leadership Studies with a specialization in Educational Leadership from Alverernia University (Reading, PA, USA). She has her Bachelor of Arts in psychology and Master of Arts in counseling psychology from Rosemont College where she won the Alumni Association Scholastic Excellence Award (Valedictorian) for her undergraduate class. Brown’s research interests include leadership in higher education, psychology, and sustainability.

Mike Gonzales

Mike Gonzales was born in Long Beach California back in the 20th Century.

He’s been an Armor NCO and a Cavalry officer. After his military career, he became the curator of a military history museum. Now he has embarked on a third profession, that of fictionist.

Mike’s experience has taken him to many places around the globe where he dove headfirst into the different cultures he encountered.

Mike has been a teacher, an administrator, and a combat arms leader. These and many more elements of his professions have fired his imagination and allowed him to add great depth to the worlds he has created.

Mike and his lovely wife, Katie have two children, Christine, and Max.

Today he resides in Oklahoma City where he can oftentimes be found in libraries and bookstores because Mike is a voracious reader of science, history, high adventure, and of course, science fiction.

James Copley

James Copley is a former Non-Commissioned Officer of the U.S. Army, having served over twenty-one years in both Active and Reserve/Guard units, variously trained as Infantry, Communications, and Ordnance specialties before finally retiring from the Army National Guard in 2016. During his service, he deployed four separate times, twice to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan.

I’m a career soldier, student of history and writer. I’ve spent over seventeen years serving overseas in Europe, Asia and Oceania, and can order beer in several languages. I started off as a young enlisted man and then commissioned later on as an Infantry officer. I’m a graduate of Airborne School, Ranger School, earned my Expert Infantryman Badge, and did some time in combat. Herb Thompson

Herb Thompson is the best-selling and award-winning author of The Transition Mission and is currently a Program Manager for veteran programs at a large tech company. He retired in March 2019 after 20 years in the Army. Herb culminated his service as a Special Forces (Green Beret), Team Sergeant, in the 5th Special Forces Group.  Before earning his Green Beret, he won the 2008 U.S. Army Drill Sergeant of the Year award. He is the only person in the Army’s history to have achieved this award and the Green Beret. 

Herb earned an MBA from Cornell University post service, a B.S. in Business Studies from Southern New Hampshire University, and attended Tuck: Next Step Transition to Business, a graduate certificate program at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. He currently resides at his slice of heaven in the woods near Washington, DC, with his girlfriend and their blended family of four teenage children. Michael Cardwel

Michael Cardwell retired after thirty-two years in the US Army. He studied creative writing at Indiana University and has published poetry and prose in military reviews, literary journals, and magazines.

He lives with his wife, Roni, in Middle America and spends time writing, brewing coffee, chasing dogs, and enjoying eight grandchildren.

He has published a collection of short stories, “THE ROUGH STUFF,” and a first novel, “FRONTIER JUSTICE.”

Lucas Marcum is a critical care nurse practitioner and an officer in the US Army Reserve. When he’s not working, or performing his reserve duties, he can be found hiking, reading, attempting to perfect his soft pretzel recipe and spending time with his family. 

Bill McCloud

Bill McCloud has been teaching American history since 1974 and is a three-time Teacher of the Year. His first book, WHAT SHOULD WE TELL OUR CHILDREN ABOUT VIETNAM? (University of Oklahoma Press), was a finalist for the Oklahoma Book Award. All of his Vietnam War papers have been purchased by the main library at Harvard University. Dozens of his Vietnam War poems are part of the official curriculum in both English and American History classes at the University School of Milwaukee, WI, one of the nation’s leading private college-preparatory schools. His new book, THE SMELL OF THE LIGHT (Balkan Press), consists of 106 poems that cover, chronologically, his year in Vietnam. His book “The Smell of the Light: Vietnam 1968-1969 won the Winter 2021 Poetry of Modern Conflict Award. He’s a 2017 Woody Guthrie Poet and an adjunct professor of American history at Rogers State University. He lives in Pryor, OK, where a Little League baseball field has been named in his honor.

Bart Kemper

Bart is new to fiction but has had a long career as a nonfiction writer, engineer, and military professional.  After going to grade school in West Berlin, Germany and graduating high school from Brooklyn, NY he joined the Army, with his last duty station being a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division as a military journalist.  Returning to college, he leveraged his press credentials and portfolio to work for daily papers in Baton Rouge, La. as well as freelanced for magazines and wire services.

He continued to write and shoot photography while starting his career as a licensed Professional Engineer and continuing his military service as an engineer officer in the Army Reserve. He retired from the military after 34 years of enlisted and commissioned service, holding multiple commands at the company and field grade level and serving all over the world, including combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He still works as a consulting engineer with work ranging from explosives to submarine design to infrastructure assessment to testifying as a forensic expert.

Bart has earned over a dozen patents, authored over 35 professional papers, and earned many bylines as a freelance photographer and writer. His black and white art photography has been exhibited in shows in California, Louisiana, Texas, North Carolina, and New York.   His presentations have been about design ethics, security engineering, fracture mechanics, Artificial Intelligence, simulations, international policy, infrastructure policy, and anti-terrorism.   He is the Editor in Chief of the Journal of the National Academy of Forensic Engineers.

Bart is now returning to his first love, fiction.  He grew up reading science fiction and fantasy, a passion he learned from his father, who took him to his first science fiction conventions.  Bart brings a lifetime of world travel and experiences, ranging from bartending in dive bars to humanitarian response as a civilian to leading combat missions. His most recent works have been for veteran-owned Three Ravens Press, including a story in Starflight: Tales from the Starport Lounge and co-editing an upcoming anthology, Tomorrow’s Hope.

J.F. Holmes

J.F. Holmes is a retired Army Senior Noncommissioned Officer, having served for 22 years in both the Regular Army and Army National Guard. During that time, he served as everything from an artillery section leader to a member of a Division level planning staff, with tours in Cuba and Iraq, as well as responding to the terrorists attacks in NYC on 9-11.

 From 2010 to 2014 he wrote the immensely popular military cartoon strip, “Power Point Ranger”, poking fun at military life in the tradition of Beetle Bailey and Willy & Joe.

 His books range from Military Sci-Fi to Space Opera to Detective to Fantasy, with a lot in between, and in 2017 two are finalists for the prestigious Dragon Awards.

Gavin Aung Than

Gavin Aung Than is a freelance cartoonist based in Melbourne, Australia. After working in the corporate graphic design industry for eight years he quit his unfulfilling job at the end of 2011 to focus on his true passion, drawing cartoons. Gavin launched Zen Pencils at the start of 2012, a cartoon blog that adapts inspirational quotes into comic stories, and hasn’t looked back since.

Phil Fehrenbacher

A native Oregonian, Phil was born and raised in Portland and in 1977 moved to Salem, where he still resides. In 2003 he retired from the State of Oregon where he was a graphic designer/illustrator for 28 years. Phil and Wife Julie have been married 51 years and have three grown children and six grandchildren. His four-year military career began with Basic Training at Ft. Ord, February 1966. Following Basic he was an illustrator in training aids at Ft Rucker, Alabama. His next assignment was at the NATO Weapons School in Oberammergau, Germany. In December 1967 he received orders to report to the 6th PSYOPS Bn in Vietnam. Landing during Tet 1968 his orders were changed, and he was assigned to the 519th MI Bn (Binh Loi, RVN) and spent a second tour at the Combined Document Exploitation Center in RVN (20 months in-country). Phil ended his service an E-6 (SSG) intelligence analyst. Currently, on Facebook he publishes In-Country (about a tour of duty in Vietnam), Gray Area (cartoons about seniors), and Fehrenbacher Illustration (hundreds of my designs for Harley-Davidson and other commercial/fine art)

Clayton Murwin

Clayton Murwin is a 58 year old Award Winning New Pulp Cover Artist, Freelance Comic book artist, and Fire Artist.  

Born in Norfolk, VA, Clayton grew up in Jacksonville FL and NC. He is a lifelong artist and enjoys painting, drawing, comic art, and graphic novels.

Clayton lived in Wallasey Merseyside England for 5 years and that is where he met his   wonderful wife, Collette. He currently lives in Jacksonville FL and is avaialble to hire for contract or freelance work. You can contact him @ cmerwin6@gmail.com
